The Castle of Montecuccolo and surrounding medieval village of the same name stand at 873 m above sea level, just 3 km from the centre of Pavullo. The first written mention of a place referred to as ‘mons qui vocatur Cuculi’ dates to 1027, during which time it was occupied by a family of feudal lords believed to have originally come from Germany. The Municipality of Pavullo purchased the castle in 1961, and began its complete restoration in 1970.

The restoration of the castle can be seen as a celebration of the life of the cosmopolitan and ‘Europeanist’ Raimondi Montecuccoli, who was born here.

Now open to the public, the castle is an important cultural and tourist destination, and welcomes visitors with its new exhibitions including works by local artists of note, such as ‘The Village Rediscovered’ by Gino Covili, a collection of sculptures and drawings by Raffaele Biolchini, and the ‘Ferruccio Minghelli’ Natural History Museum of Frignano, combining art, history and an interesting insight into the local area.
