The restored path is historically an important stretch of road, which in the past connected the area of Frignano with Tuscany via Mount Albano and the Saltello Pass.
The stretch that has been restored goes from Pievepelago to Roccapelago, and vice versa.
The road had been replaced by a more recent carriageway 80 or 90 years ago, and, as such, was almost abandoned, used by just a few local residents.
It is a lovely walk, not too long and not too steep, and is ideal for those coming to Pievepelago to visit the Roccapelago Mummy Museum.
After walking half an hour along the trail, you will begin to see the ancient stronghold of Roccapelago as it comes into view. The surrounding landscape is stunning, consisting of pastureland to either side of the road which leads from the locality of La Bonifica to the locality of Casina, and then passes through a forest where beech trees grow alongside firs and pines. The road leads to the centre of the present-day village of Roccapelago, and joins the road up to the castle, which houses the Mummy Museum, a mandatory stop for all visitors to the area. Here you will be able to appreciate the history of the place, and also admire the peaks and ridges of the Apennines looking southwards from the summit of the promontory where the castle stands.
If you wish to start out from Pievepelago, you need to go up Via della Rocca, opposite Via Tamburù (where the colourful Corpus Domini flower festival takes place).
